The end of an era.

General Rubbish

It’s the end of an era.

After nearly 45 years of Greenfield Engineering (Titanium), which is what GETi stood for, we decided it was time to, not quite sweep it under the carpet, but condense the name a little, after all, it was a bit of a mouthful.

So, on 10th January 2010, we paid our £10 to Companies House and officially became GETi Ltd. No time for sadness though – “out with the old and in with the new” I always say, and there is always a little reminder of how long we’ve been going in the new logo in case we forget :)

Enigma Titanium Diamond Set Bike Frame

General Rubbish

The first woman to cycle up Snowdon has been presented with an Enigma custom-built titanium bike personalised by Nicholas James jewellers with inset diamonds and 18ct gold parts and trim.

The bike was commissioned by cyclist, Digi Foo-Kune’s husband who asked jewellers Nicholas James to produce a special present for his wife. Nick Fitch, owner of Nicholas James, said that the request was a sign of the times as people increasingly seek something different. “People are constantly searching for a bit of individuality,” he said. “We find that with our jewellery too where we offer low volume and lots of bespoke work.”

The bike’s Enigma frame incorporates two diamonds and 18ct solid gold logos. Fitch explained that although the request was unusual it was not beyond their means. “We are contemporary fine jewellers at heart but we were more than able to take on the challenge. We wanted to produce something that is not a gimmick but is very usable,” he added.

The bike will be on display at Nicholas James’ showroom in Hatton Garden until the end of December.

Out with the old…..

General Rubbish

…. and in with the new!

We just had a new CNC lathe delivered a couple of weeks ago. A brand spanking shiney new DMG to replace our 5 year old Colchester.

It doesn’t do anything any different to the old one but it’s just new with a more modern control. I like to get rid of machinery when they get to 5 years old so that there is a fairly decent amount of money still left in it to go down as a healthy deposit toward the new one – it takes the sting out of it a bit as well.

I Don’t Want to Encourage You to Break the Law, But…

General Rubbish

… What better excuse do you need when caught red handed robbing a parking meter than to explain to the officers that you need to get arrested in order to have your fingerprints taken so that you can have them laser engraved using our new laser fingerprint engraving service?

Inspired by forensic science and a brush with the law comes a novel way to personalise items of jewellery using our laser engraving service. Fingerprint engraved jewellery – inside or outside of rings , pendants, cufflinks, Titanium or precious metal.

Your fingerprint should be black and as legible as possible on white paper. You may have to experiment with different methods and inks to get the best impression, but, if you get frustrated, please resist the urge to knock over an offlicence and getting caught on purpose just to get your local constabulary to do it for you – a ten year stretch just isn’t worth it!

Contact us for more details or please post or email your fingerprint for engraving to us.

My Titanium Ring is Scratched – I thought it Was Indestructable!

General Rubbish

No, Titanium rings will get scratched. The only way to prevent it is the same as for rings made out of precious metals – keep it in a box and don’t wear it!

Not very practical advice though when it’s your wedding ring is it? Most people appreciate that Titanium rings get scratched just like any other metal (Tungsten Carbide excluded of course), but what can you do to minimise the scratches. If it is a satin finish, you could give it a quick rub over with wire wool to take out the fine rub marks. This won’t remove heavy scratches or knocks and it won’t restore the ring to its original  ’showroom condition’, but it will improve it. Rubbing over with wire wool  shouldn’t be done too often if the ring has a precious metal inlay as it may wear out the inlay in time, but plain rings will be fine.

Polished rings will dull down slightly with wear – the most important thing to remember with most rings is that they will not keep their original finish but will take on their own character in time and each scratch and rub mark is a part of the ring’s history.

The Spring Fair Birmingham Finished Today

General Rubbish

5th February 2009

I had a wander round the jewellery section yesterday and you could almost hear your thoughts echoing off the walls it was so quiet. Everybody was complaining that it was dead this year and, to be fair, the weather must have had a lot to do with it – many people were snowed in on Monday, combine that with the worst recession for 25 years?  and it obviously doesn’t help. The official results will probably be that it was the best show ever with record attendances :-)

Did you go? Did you exhibit? How was it for you?

Did You Have a Good Christmas?

General Rubbish

In a word – no!

I just managed to get Christmas Day out the way before I was reduced to a feeble, whimpering, coughy-spluttery wreck, with all the drive of a 3 toed sloth on Valium.

Typical – you work all year, then a little bit of free time appears and your body goes into shock and shuts down for two weeks – no wonder I don’t like Christmas. On the plus side, I bought myself a new telly and my sprouts were done to perfection.

Did you put your sprouts on for Christmas yet?

General Rubbish

If you didn’t put your sprouts on the boil back in April so that they would be ready for Christmas day all may not be lost in achieving that classic mushiness we all know and love (before you say it Blackdogg, I know you don’t like sprouts!)

Simply microwave on full for 15 hours (for an 800W oven) and finish off with 3 hours traditional boiling on Christmas morning to get the best results.

Scarey Moments in History

General Rubbish

Not general history though, just mine.

I think one of my all time scariest moments was whilst taking Oskar for his daily walkabout round the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. Oskar is my dog – not the friendliest Doberman in the world, especially towards other dogs and motorbikes, so imagine my horror at turning a corner and seeing three Rottweilers walking along the road on the opposite side, off their leads and free to run at anything they wanted to – which they did, me and Oskar.

Oskar was only just out of puppyhood at the time and wanted to take on the world, or in this case, three out of control Rottweilers. Now the sight of three snarling, barking monsters running towards you would, as you can probably imagine, send a little bit of a chill down the spine. What was I supposed to do – run away? It seemed like the sensible thing to do but Oskar was having none of it, oh no siree, he wanted to stay and fight, bless his little cold, wet nose. This sort of meant I was commited as well, so I waited for the inevitable blood bath to follow.

Luckily, the dogs owner managed to call them back within ten feet of us, just before I had to leap into action, kicking and screaming (mainly screaming though!). I don’t really know what would have happened if they had ignored the owner, but it all ended safely with neither me nor Oskar falling victim to the strict £1,000 on the spot Jewellery Quarter anti fouling laws, although in my case I think that was due more to a rather efficient watertight trouser membrane than luck!
